We’re dedicating this weekend’s “Sample Saturdays” to the original soundtrack to our ‘epic summer’: D.R.A.M.’s “Cha Cha”.
German-born and Virginia-raised, D.R.A.M seemingly popped onto the music scene out of nowhere in early 2014. By the time his popular Sunny & Gabe-produced single finally took off, nearly a year had already past. The breakout song caught the attention of co-founder of Def Jam, Rick Rubin, independent Hip-Hop artist, Chance the Rapper, and tons of unsuspecting listeners. The emerging artist’s catchy tune even made Beyoncé move her hips.
This feel good song did spark some controversy recently though when Canadian-singer, Drake, replicated the cadence of the Super Mario World-sampled hit. D.R.A.M. addressed the matter in a tweeted statement.
Listen to “Star World” from Super Mario World and instantly notice the sonic similarities.
